Why did you decide to work in Norway?
I had the opportunity to live in Norway for several months in 2016 and was thoroughly impressed by the country’s natural beauty, climate, and efficient organization. Norway is a highly organized nation where everything functions seamlessly. Although I returned to Croatia by chance, I always had the desire to return to Norway. It was then that I came across an advertisement for SLS online, attended their presentation in Zagreb, and that marked the beginning of this journey.

Did you initially combine work and language courses?
Initially, I combined work and courses. Since I worked in Croatia as a nurse in kindergarten, it was not a problem to combine one with the other. The course was held in the evenings, which suited me well.
How was the language course? What were the biggest difficulties in learning the language?
The Norwegian language was entirely unfamiliar to us – something new and different, rarely heard in our daily lives. I must admit, it was a challenge, especially at the age of 55. However, I eagerly anticipated each lecture, and I greatly appreciated the opportunity to meet great language teachers and connect with colleagues, with whom I formed valuable new friendships.
How is the SLS language course organized? What was the atmosphere like during the course, how did you feel?
As I mentioned earlier, I looked forward to each lecture. The team was great, and the professors were excellent. If you couldn’t attend a session, the professors would send a recording so you could always stay up to date.
How was the cooperation with SLS? Would you recommend the program to other nurses?
My experience working with SLS was excellent. I received constant feedback, and there was never a problem they didn’t work to resolve and help with. I would highly recommend SLS to anyone ready for new experiences and challenges. It wasn’t always easy, but whenever you feel like it’s too tough and you’re about to give up, don’t hesitate to reach out to Natasa. She is always there to offer support and encouragement on your journey.
Tell us something about the moment you arrived in Norway and actually started working. How were the first days, what were the challenges, how did you feel and how do you feel now? Where do you work in Norway? What do you think about the location?
I have to admit, it was challenging. My first job was in Ørsta, near Ålesund, where they speak Nynorsk and a local dialect. At first, I couldn’t understand anything, but over time, it became easier and more manageable. I worked in home care, and my colleagues were incredibly supportive. If I had to go through it all again, I would do it without hesitation.
After completing my first project in Ørsta, I received an offer from BoHjemme, a company located near Oslo. I’ve been with them for almost two years now, and I’m very satisfied with everything: the working conditions, the relationships with my colleagues, the employer’s support, my rights and obligations, and the shift schedules.
I continue to work in rotations (6 weeks in Norway, 3 weeks in Croatia), which works perfectly for me. My entire family is in Croatia, and we have no plans to move to Norway. However, I know many families who have moved here and are enjoying a very good life in Norway.
Life in Scandinavia is quite different from what we are used to in Croatia. For anyone who loves challenges, adventure, and is eager for new experiences, I believe Scandinavia is exactly what they need. SLS is here to support you in many ways and make your transition to a new life and environment easier. And trust me, they are always there for you and ready to help.
